FBI Director Wray warns of Chinese hacking, espionage threats against American companies

FBI Director Christopher Wray on Tuesday warned of ongoing Chinese counterintelligence threats to American companies and health care groups, saying that Chinese espionage cases had increased by 1,300 percent over the past decade.

“We are conducting these kinds of investigations in all 56 of our field offices, and over the past decade, we have seen economic espionage cases linked to China increase by approximately 1,300 percent,” Wray said during an event at the Hudson Institute. “The stakes could not be higher, and the potential economic harm to American businesses and the economy as a whole almost defies calculation.”

What companies gained, lost by going virtual in 2020

By Maria Saporta

For corporate America, 2020 was the year of virtual annual meetings.

Media’s Favorite Anti-Pharma Expert Was Paid Hundreds of Thousands By Lawyers Suing Drug Companies

Hundreds of news stories cited a health care expert’s attacks on Big Pharma without mentioning that he was being paid six-figure sums by lawyers suing drug companies.

In a 2019 interview with CBS’s 60 Minutes, Brandeis University professor Andrew Kolodny denounced the pharmaceutical industry’s tactics in getting FDA approval for certain opioids. “If it’s not illegal, it should be illegal,” he said of such behavior.

Recent Stories in Politics

The news program failed to disclose that Kolodny had a financial stake in advancing such an opinion. In a September conflict of interest disclosure, the professor acknowledged that he had “received compensation for work as […] Read more

Companies Staying Mum on FBI Surveillance of Customers, Records Show

SAN FRANCISCO (CN) – The FBI gave 126 companies permission to disclose details of warrantless demands for customer data, but only a handful have spoken up about the government’s use of the secretive surveillance tool, according to an analysis of newly released data.

The data was obtained by the Electronic Frontier Foundation following a two-year legal battle over records related to the FBI’s compliance with required periodic reviews of national security letter (NSL) gag orders. NSLs are secret government demands for customer records, issued through an administrative subpoena without a court order.

Earlier this year, U.S. District Judge Vince Chhabria ordered the […] Read more
