61.8% of U.S. Patents Issued in 2019 Were ‘Software- Related’—up 21.6% from 2018

As an update to my posts from 2017 and 2019, it has now been more than six years since the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2014 Alice Corp. v. CLS Bank decision. The USPTO’s Section 101 guidelines interpreting Alice—and the accompanying 46 examples—have not cleared the confusion, and Alice continues to distract the USPTO, courts, and practitioners from focusing properly on Sections 102 (novelty) and 103 (obviousness). The […] Read more

By Mike Festa, State Director, AARP Massachusetts

Why Equifax Stock Climbed 50.5% in 2019

What happened

Shares of Equifax (NYSE:EFX) gained 50.5% in 2019, according to data from S&P Global Market Intelligence . The credit-reporting company’s stock rose thanks to a series of earnings beats and with the shadow of the big 2017 data breach receding further into the rear view.

^SPX data by YCharts

The company’s shares wound up roughly flat in 2017 after recovering from the data-breach sell-off and then fell roughly 21% in 2018 after a weak quarterly report and sell-offs for the broader market hit at the end of the year. With market momentum at its back and four consecutive quarterly reports that topped earnings […] Read more
